Importance of Posture and Stretching for Graceful Aging
We are more than we eat. We are an ever-evolving product of what we put in, what doesn't come out, and what we do with what we've got.
I live in a home with a 104 year old matriarch. She was a musician in her time, & goes by the name of a character she played in San Francisco of the late '30, so she's more erudite and cultured than most people no matter their age. She has had a remarkable life, and the 4 generations of women who make up this family, quite extraordinary each and every one of them, are great teachers that I am learning and my life being enriched from.
The observation that leads me to write this article is how difficult her life has become, simply because of lack of knowledge of good posture through her otherwise eventful years. My qualifications include years of work as a Fascal Tendon (Rolfology) Massage Practitioner, an AcroYoga student, and a sometimes-called upon caretaker for a woman who has lost more than mere "range of motion" because of a lack of stretching through an otherwise long and beautiful life.
Observations coming, but first I'd like to ask my readers, have you heard of Rolfing? Do you know about how the muscles of the body atrophy if not put to use? Have you ever seen a hunchback? How about an old person hunched? Now the hard questions:
Do you believe that you will not be hunched over if you are blessed with a long and healthy life? Define Healthy. Does that include regular stretching? Does that have fun activities like AcroYoga as a part of it? How about a martial arts practice? Will that help? What can people do to avoid the inevitable problems that come with aging, if they are made aware of these problems earlier in life?
