Plant a Healing Garden

The current garden project I am working on is an apothecary garden. I want to make more tinctures, oils and salves for myself and for my business , so I have plans to fill it with a number of healing herbs. Like any herb garden it will need to be planted in full sun, and drain well. Any of the mints may need to be contained. Yarrow, and St. John's Wort can be invasive, so I haven't decided if I want to plant in one big bed, or use raised beds and containers.     Some plants I am considering include:   Calendula (calendula officinalis) St. John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum) Comfrey (symphytum officinale) Lemon Balm (melissa officinalis) Chamomile (Matricaria recutita ) Passionflower (passiflora incarnata) Bee Balm (mondara didyma) Yarrow (achillia millefolium) Catnip or Catmint (nepeta cataria) Echinacea (echinachia augustifolia) Aloe Vera Visit www.christopherhobbs.com for an herbal database, and to view pictures of the above plants.

What are the benefits?

What are the benefits and uses of some of the above herbs? I am familiar with some, like aloe vera, and echinacea, but I am always interested in learning more about natural health care and medicinal herbs! I'm sure many of our users would love to know how to use some of these plants to improve their health and provide alternatives to medicines with synthetic ingredients and potentially harmful side effects. Thanks for sharing your wisdom!

Benefits of Herbs in the Apothocary Garden

karen I use the annual herb, calendula in all of my healing salves. Infused in Olive Oil for several weeks, calendula is a wonderful herb for the skin. Lemon balm is known as the "happy herb" and can be used alone as a tea, or in blends with chamomile and passionflower which are also "calming" herbs. Lemon balm is often used as a "flavoring" in herbal teas Comfrey leaves, again infused in olive oil, is great in balms for healing.(I do not take internally, but use in healing ointments) Echinacea root is used in tintures/capsule form during the cold season Lavender can be used in tub teas, musling bags as dryer sacs, in dream pillows along with passionflower, chamomile, dried rose buds.

great list

It is so nice to grow your own herbs for business.  Some of mine are lemongrass, rose geranium, comfrey, aloe, and yarrow.  I wild harvest others.  :)  Cory Trusty ...
